How do body proportions change with increasing size in male and female bodies?
While male bodies tend to gather fat in the belly and the narrowest part of the body slides down, in female bodies fat tends to gather around the hips which lifts the narrowest part up towards the under bust.
How can this knowledge help you in draping and designing clothes? It tells you how to accentuate the waist in larger sizes to crate a more flattering shape and celebrate curves 💕

Oversized denim jacket draping tutorial 👖
The denim jacket you know was born in the 1930s. The design of modern denim jackets hasn't changed much compared to those days. The function and design of the jacket would have been completed that much. This time, I tried to make the silhouette quite large while keeping the details of the denim jacket.
Go to the bio link to see the whole tutorial on YouTube “The Library of Draping” and drape your own denim jacket!

Women’s Wide Coat with Two-Piece Sleeve
In fashion, the change in a silhouette is not the change in the shape of the clothes that you see with your eyes, but the change in the space between the clothes and the body. For example, if two people with two different body types wear the same outfit, the difference in the silhouette is going to be obvious.
When we drape, it is important to be constantly aware of this space as we shape the fabric.

Blouse with Butterfly 🦋 Sleeve in Bias
Puff sleeves have a long history and a large variety
accordingly. If we go back in time, we might think of the
puff sleeves from the renaissance or the gothic era.
More recently valentinos influence gave puff sleeves a
huge comeback.
In this video I will introduce you to a light and soft puff sleeve that looks like a butterfly
spreading its wings on your shoulders. It's a rare pattern,
where the sleeve is coming out of the front without an
additional seam. The use of the fabric in bias gives the
sleeve its special soft appearance.
Go to YouTube and look for “The Library of Draping” to watch the whole video!

Classic Kimono 👘 Sleeve Jacket
In this video we will introduce you to a jacket with a kimono sleeve that has a gusset underneath the arm. This sleeve was highly fashionable during the 1940‘s, but started to disappear with the mass production of clothing, as it is technically quite difficult to fabricate. Nevertheless the delicate and beautiful silhouette of this unique sleeve is unmatched by any other. We also paired this jacket with a shawl collar that mimics a tailored collar. The gently curved break line gives a very soft feel to the overall design.

When you think of draping, this kind of flowing, Couture-like dress 👗 is perhaps what comes to your mind~.
.
Due to the Corona pandemic, fashion is expected to continue its shift towards more and more casual clothing. Dress codes that used to be of importance will soon lose their meaning entirely. I don't think we will lose occasions to wear a dress, but the occasions where one can opt out of wearing a dress will increase. Still, dresses have the power to fascinate women and men, and beautiful dresses can simply be life-changing.
.
Passing on the culture of dresses to the future is also an important task for us fashion professionals. I hope you enjoy watching the process of making such a beautiful dress.

Balmacaan coat… sounds unfamiliar? It’s the name of one of the most recognizable men’s fashion items, but not the catchiest name.
Balmacaan is an estate in Scotland where the design of the coat originated from. Loose-fitted, raglan sleeve and a larger collar with belt and button that you can close when the weather gets rough.
It can go from elegant to casual depending on the fabric. Worn in the final scene of “Naked Face” by Roger Moore (1984) … not born yet? Well, study up on your fashion history 😂
You can watch the full tutorial on how to make such a versatile piece of clothing on the YouTube channel “The Library of Draping” and you can of course have the male dress from in 48, that the coat is draped on. Just go to www.spur-dress form.com (link also in the profile).

Shirts developed alongside jackets and their silhouette fluctuates through time. While the 90’s saw a the more loose or big silhouette as desirable, we see much more skinny jackets and fitting shirts underneath these days.
This shirt is a tighter silhouette with a casual collar design but you to make it skin-tight, deconstructed, oversized or… what’s the next trend. It’s up to you!
You can watch the whole tutorial on YouTube on “The Library of Draping” channel.

The flat pattern method is mostly applied to men’s fashion, which makes sense, since male bodies tend to have less curves than female bodies… but could that be limiting the creativity in men’s fashion?
Draping a suit might sound odd, but it opens so many doors and we can start the blend those gender lines with dress forms as our canvases.
We will upload many more men’s fashion draping tutorials in the next few weeks, where Mr. Kondo shows you technical skills to drape suits and he will also start to play with introducing more historically feminine design features to suggest the fashion of the future.

I‘m singing in the rain… or are you thinking of spies 🕵️♀️ or any of the epic deconstructed raglan trench coats? The trench coat with raglan sleeves is such a dense piece of clothing in its history, used techniques and its symbolism that it is like a rite of passage for any designer.
.
You can learn how to drape and customize your own trench by watching the full tutorial on „Kondo‘s Draping Library“ YouTube channel and make it work for your style and proportions. Happy draping ✂️

Inner wear turning into outer wear, is a very common historical development in fashion history, like in the case of bloomers and the camisole. The bustier might be one of the most flashy, provocative and sexy examples of this.
.
Madonna rocked the conically shaped bust designed by Jean Paul Gaultier in the 80s and these days celebrities like Ariana Grande and Cardi B are at the forefront of bustier fashion.
.
Draping a bustier is fun and not that hard. So carve it up as you want to, accentuate the lines and bring on the glam.
.
This is a preview of the tutorial and as always you can watch the whole video on YouTube under Kondo’s Draping Library.

Making dress forms is not just about creaking pretty dolls, but about collecting hard-core anthropometric data.
.
Over 10 years we have collected countless body measurements of females and males in Europe and Asia. Data is collected both digitally as well as through analogue techniques. This ensures that the Spur dress forms are both empirically sound and aesthetically pleasing.

It’s not an optical illusion :) it’s our beloved spur in 36 scaled down to half of her size.
.
“Playing” on a half sized dress form can be really wonderful for your creativity as you don’t have to worry about wasting tons of muslin or original fabrics while you let loose. This is great when you are ecologically and or financially conscious. The smaller scale allows you to also see the whole picture better, when you are the kind of person to get lost in details.
.
Just like on the “full grown” spur, you can remove the head and adjust her height.
.
Make your wildest ideas come true!

The male muse is on the rise. Traditionally muses have been regarded to be female but more and more husbands, brothers and sons are seen in this light.
Spur 48 is a male dress form with detachable head that allows you to work with your muse. Draping was also long associated with woman’s clothes but men’s fashion has entered an era where not only functionality but also creativity, sculptural beauty and flamboyance are welcomed. The arms (sold separately) give you the option to drape the sleeves as you check the fit, form and flare of your design.
What does your muse look like?

Some things never change. Like the basic pattern of a Jeans Jacket. But by draping the jacket, you have full control over its fullness, the precise location of the seams, the armhole and all the accessories. All those decision can be made in real-time looking at the design on a realistic and inspiring dress form. You can make it your own.
Check out the full video on “Kondo’s Draping Library” on YouTube to learn how to drape a Jeans Jacket.

Even the most avid drapers tend to draw patterns when it comes to pants, because on most lower body dress forms the legs are unmovable and therefore pinning on the inside of the leg is close to impossible.
On Spur lower body dress forms, one leg is completely removable making it easy to pin and drape. Also both feet can be detached for trying on skinny pants. This allows your creativity free reign.
The Spur-East series is based on anthropomorphic measurements from Japan and are suited for the Asian market. More on Spur East soon!
